If you were asked why Jesus came to earth, would you provide any of the reasons He gives in Luke 12:49-59? In this text, Jesus offers some unexpected answers—to cast fire, to undergo baptism, and not to give peace but rather division. Jesus also emphasizes the potential conflicts within families when one follows Christ and another rejects Him. Furthermore, Jesus’ illustrations here about weather forecasts and a courtroom emphasize the opportunity one has to repent and the urgency with which we need to respond. God has a case against every sinner, but God is offering to settle His claim with any sinner who will trust in Jesus Christ.
