We’ll see how the promise of Jesus’ coming crucifixion may be a surprise to the disciples, but Jesus makes it the cornerstone on which discipleship is built. Following Christ requires both self-denial and a willingness to embrace the cross-centered life. It’s only through renouncing our hope and security that we have in this life that we can find the profit of the life to come. Directing our eyes to his return, Jesus confronts us with his definition of a profitable life.
