This week we will see the power of Jesus over the physical world as he heals a woman with an incurable disease and raises a girl from the dead. We will see the desperation of two individuals in need and the compassion of Christ to heal them, not only physically, but spiritually. This text will challenge us to place our faith and trust in the Lord regardless of the severity of our circumstances.

Jesus and his disciples sail to a Gentile region where they are met by the demon-possessed man. We have seen Jesus exercise his authority over the wind and the waves, and here we see his power over a legion of demons. When Jesus delivers the man from demonic possession, he is transformed by Jesus’ power and by his grace. When Jesus works in a person’s life, that person is never the same.

In another scene in a boat with his disciples, Jesus calms the wind and the waves. The disciples are first desperate in the face of certain death and then stunned and fearful at the power of Jesus. Revealing yet another aspect of his divinity, Jesus rebukes them for their lack of faith. Their example shows us that our trust in Jesus during our own storms is always informed by who we believe him to be.
